I like pretty much anything in sandwich form and if I have an excuse to make something that upgrades a sandwich, I’m there.

Now, I’m also a big fan of magazine subscriptions (yes, in tangible paper form). So, if a variation on my favorite diner sandwich literally lands on my doorstep, I have to make it.

Better Homes & Gardens‘ December 2018 issue has a really easy and delicious recipe for a Monte Cristo Breakfast Casserole.

What you’ll need:

  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 8 eggs
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 to 1 1/2 lb loaf country Italian bread, cut into 1/2 in slices
  • 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
  • 8 oz thinly sliced cooked ham
  • 6 oz shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese
  • 1/4 cup softened butter
  • powdered sugar

What to do:

Use some of the butter to grease a 3 quart baking dish. I also want to point out my baking dish is actually from the BHG collection at Walmart.

In a bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, garlic, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp black pepper.
